Buy New Zealand

by Scott Evangelou on November 26, 2008

In October, 2,400 US residents typed “buy New Zealand” into google.com. Perhaps they were looking to buy a Kiwi-made product. Why was that? Was it because of the popularity of Lord of the Rings? Or, was it due to an effective NZ Tourism advertising campaign in America, promoting clean and green Kiwi products? I do not have the data to answer these questions. But I do believe Kiwis make some great things; and foreigners know it.

And, there is a lot of room for New Zealand companies to optimise their websites for the keywords related to “buy new zealand.” For example, the website www.shopnewzealand.com has an extensive catologue of quality Kiwi-made products, yet their website is not properly optimised to rank in search engines (SEO) for their individual products; nor does it have a presence on the plethora of social media (SMO) sites where people flock.

Thus, www.shopnewzealand.com are potentially missing out on millions of dollars in overseas sales by overlooking simple SEO and SMO principles. The fix: proper search engine and social media optimisation of their website, which would cost only a few thousand dollars. Imagine the return on investment for such a little effort emphasising that people buy New Zealand?
