Online marketing, website usability and market share

by Scott Evangelou on June 24, 2010

Online marketing is today’s battleground for web business growth. As millions of people continue to gain Internet access, being found in the search engines for the terms people are using to find your product or service will be the promotional edge your company needs to gain market share.

those who don’t ‘bother using market research to shape their services to their customers’ desires, [will] lose market share to those that do.’ – Geoffry Miller, Spent

Two things are required to get market share via online marketing:

  1. get found in the top 5 results in google when prospects type in phrases related to your product or service
  2. when these searchers  click through to your website, you provide an easy-to-use interface and/or shopping cart

Here is a great example:

  1. I do a search for “online games
  2. I choose the 5th result that seems to closely match my query:  www.mightyape.co.nz/Games/
  3. I  use the prominent search box to find my desired game
  4. I order with an easy-to-use shopping cart
  5. I am told my order will ship immediately
  6. After the sale, Mighty Ape suggest some other special deals for a discount
  7. My customer experience is a great one

I have no affiliation with Mighty Ape. However, we have been customers for some time and always love the experience with navigating their site, making orders and getting shipment next day.

So, the Mighty Ape website interface is easy-to-find on google and easy-to-use for the website customer. Does this mean it will gain greater market share in the online gaming competition? Or for “buying DVDs?”

I bet.

Go try shopping there. Then, please let us know your experience by commenting below.
